To Prospective Students

Welcome to my homepage! This blog contains general information for prospective students who are interested in joining my research group.
To start with, let me introduce my research interests. My research is primarily focused on improving reliability, efficiency and resiliency of future complex energy systems (including electric power grids, natural gas networks, and multi-energy systems) under climate changes and extreme weather conditions. Particularly, I am devoting to methodological innovations and breakthroughs that can reveal fundamental geometric and topological properties of complex power and energy systems. With the help of these properties, advanced algorithms and analysis are further developed to solve these problems in an efficient and accurate manner. Common tools that I use in my research include optimization methods, dynamical system analysis, control theory and related mathematics. You can find more information on my main page or at my previous personal website http://danwu.mit.edu/.
Then, I would like to articulate my expectations on future students. There are six aspects that I value most in research: curiosity, passion, creativity, honesty, criticism and collaboration.
Be curious. Curiosity is the best teacher. You are encouraged to be curious about different fields of studies, taking extra credits from other departments and schools, hanging out with people in different backgrounds, and contemplating questions for fun. Always ask yourself what the fundamental reasoning is behind all the bewildering phenomena, and share your discovery excitement with others.
Be passionate. When talking about research topics, I will show you where my passion lies. You are free to choose whatever you feel interested in. But you are supposed to be passionate about your own research. More importantly, I wish you passionate about your career, your life, and your being.
Be creative. Thinking outside of existing realms. Observing similarities among different fields of studies. Establishing methodological connections. State your problem in a different way. State it again in a different way. If the contemporary work does not impress you, it is the best time to be creative.
Be honest. Concrete science builds on facts. You are obliged to be honest about facts, about what you observe, obtain, induce, deduce and report in research. No bargains.
Be critical. Dr. Shi Hu said,“做人要在有疑处不疑,做学问要在不疑处有疑。”This is the right way of doing research. Don’t follow authorities blindly. Don’t surf popular tides blindly. Don’t believe in published papers blindly. Making judgements on your own knowledge and observations. But be cautious about skepticism. Don’t dive into generic skepticism. Just be scientifically skeptical. You may not be super proficient in critical thinking at the beginning. But I do hope you gain some trainings in scientific reasoning during your graduate studies. This is a primary goal of higher education. And yet it shall be done prior to the graduate program.
Be collaborative. You are encouraged to collaborate with decent scholars from different backgrounds. Interdisciplinary discussions inspire great ideas. So, reaching out and establishing trustful connections. Respect originations of others’ ideas. But also learn how to protect your own idea. Selecting your collaborators wisely and admitting their contributions with credits.
All in all, I hope my students shall confirm with their inner selves about any improvement of one or more among these aspects with their graduate trainings.
I wish my students enjoying what they do or keeping searching for their true meanings boldly.
I wish my students not just competing with their peers in the Colosseum, but rather inventing new opportunities using their creativity and wisdom that welcome everyone.
You will have all of my support. Welcome on board!
