Dr. Ying Liu is interested in studying the molecular mechanism of pH regulation, particularly, the molecular physiology and functional regulation of Na-coupled bicarbonate transporters (NCBTs). Maintaining appropriate pH is important to a series of physical processes, while the CO₂/HCO₃^– buffer contribute a lot in it. By transporting HCO₃^– through the epithelial cell membrane, NCBTs play an important role in regulating the cells' pH.
