Jie Qiao got his Ph.D. in Urban and Rural Planning from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2019. During his doctoral studies, he completed a joint PHD program funded by the Chinese Scholarship Council under the guidance of Professor Mike Crang at the Geography Department of Durham University, UK. After that, he joined the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST). Now he is an associate Professor and Master's Supervisor at the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, HUST, Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), Committee Member of the Rural Planning and Construction Branch of the Urban Planning Society of China, Council Member of the Hubei Provincial Rural Planning Research Association, and Office Director of the Hubei Ethnic Regions Rural Construction Research Center.
His interests focus on rural industry revitalization and county-level urban-rural Integration development, catchment planning and multi-scale spatial governance, rural culture and rural construction, the interdisciplinary theoretical integration and technological governance model innovation in rural planning, with particular attention to rural planning theories and innovative practices that align with the laws of landscape economy and local knowledge. His team has completed a series of investigations in mountainous areas (such as the Dabie Mountains, Wuling Mountains). These investigations, research, and practical works are based on the characteristics of mountainous human settlements, integrating cultural, economic, and local lifestyle factors. In recent years, he has deeply participated in and observed the differences in participation mechanisms of various rural construction actions, including tourism poverty alleviation, ethnic village construction, traditional village protection, characteristic industry development (such as pig farming and citrus planting), and innovative practices in rural governance models like smart village construction. His team explores the laws of county-level urban-rural integration development under the multifunctional enhancement of rural areas, promoting the theoretical and technological innovation of rural planning in China according to local conditions.
