Prof. Liu holds a Ph.D. degree, ME degree and BE degree, all in civil engineering, from Columbia University, Tsinghua University, and Hohai University, respectively. Prior to joining HUST, he was an associate professor of civil engineering at Tsinghua University until July 2007, and was granted tenured associate professorship at City College of New York in 2013. His research interests consist of reinforced soil structures, underground structures, geotechnical earthquake engineering, and constitutive modeling. He has published over 150 journal papers in these areas. His work in these areas is impactful, demonstrated by the citations by the international community on Scopus. He is included in the list of top 2% scientists in the area of geological and geomatics engineering around the world by Prof. P. Ioannidis of Stanford University according to a composite citation score.Prof. Liu is an associate editor of Transportation Infrastructure Geotechnology. He is also an editorial board member of Canadian Geotechnical Journal and Computers and Geotechnics. He serves on the geosynthetics technical committee of ASCE. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses related to soil mechanics, geotechnical engineering, and earthquake engineering. Each academic year, he teaches three courses plus 16 individual lectures for undergraduate freshmen or PhD students.
